제목 Post-Surgery Review of Asymmetric Jaw Surgery and Achieving a Doll-Like Face! Why Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

[Before Surgery]

Hello!

Before surgery, I underwent orthodontic treatment due to an underbite and facial asymmetry. At that time, my doctor advised me to choose between double jaw surgery with orthodontics or just orthodontics. I opted for just orthodontics, as I was told it would improve my underbite, though not as effectively as surgery. However, after removing the braces, I still had a flat face, a long-looking face, and an unconfident side profile.

My face looked completely different from the front, at a 45-degree angle, and from the side. I developed a habit of covering my mouth when taking pictures, never showing my side profile. Three years passed with me wondering, "Why would I need double jaw surgery after braces?"

But then I read that the longer I delayed the surgery, the longer the recovery and the greater the risk of sagging skin. Realizing I couldn't hesitate any longer, I decided to get a consultation. My top priority was safety. Since this was a major surgery, I knew I needed to have it done at a professional and safe place, and I decided to go to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon rather than a plastic surgeon.

Watching YouTube videos of WHY Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, I saw that the doctor seemed stern but also kind. I needed someone who could objectively assess my condition, so I immediately booked a consultation.

During the consultation, I expressed my concerns about my long face, deep nasolabial folds, and flat mid-face profile. I was advised that these issues could be addressed with double jaw surgery and face contouring surgery (cheekbones, jawline, and chin).

In my case, no additional orthodontics were needed, which significantly influenced my decision. I booked the surgery two months in advance and waited nervously for the day to come.

[Surgery Day]

Living in the countryside, I fasted as I was told, and took the train to Seoul the day before the surgery. Upon arriving at the hospital, I received a final briefing, changed into surgical attire, washed my face, and waited with a solemn heart. Before I knew it, the surgery was over. The nurses focused on helping me breathe deeply. My main memory from that day was feeling extremely thirsty but having to wait until after 8 PM to drink water, which was very challenging.

[Day 1 Post-Surgery]

Before lunch, my catheter and drainage tube were removed, which was a relief. I tried walking around the hospital hallway, moving carefully to recover quickly despite feeling weak from the anesthesia. I diligently applied cold packs to reduce swelling, and the nurses were very attentive, bringing fresh packs as soon as they started to warm. Their care made me feel secure, even though I was alone without a guardian. The frequent check-ups from the doctor also helped ease my fears.

[Day 2 Post-Surgery]

Thanks to the excellent care from the nurses, I was not as swollen as I had feared, which made me very satisfied. I walked around without difficulty, received post-operative instructions, and was discharged with my prescribed medications. I had prepared nutritional drinks, Pocari Sweat, and pumpkin juice at home in advance.

[Days 3-5 Post-Surgery]

My face swelled more than I could imagine, to the point where I wondered if it was even my real face. The swelling was overwhelming, and I felt scared, questioning if I was managing my recovery properly. I constantly contacted the clinic via KakaoTalk, and they reassured me that everything was normal and provided tips to ease my concerns. Although drinking and swallowing pills became tiresome, I persevered by thinking about my future improved appearance. While staying at a friend’s house in Seoul, I went for walks and received laser treatments for de-swelling.

[Days 6-10 Post-Surgery]

From day seven, the swelling started to decrease significantly, earning me the nickname "Mirror Princess.", meaning I look in the mirror all the time. Even with the swelling, I could see a slim facial line and a noticeable improvement in my side profile, which was my biggest insecurity. I ate porridge, tiramisu, and took my medications diligently. I carefully cleaned my mouth and wafers and managed to return to work on day eleven. My colleagues commented on how small and cute my face looked, which made me very happy. Even though the swelling was still present, I felt beautiful and more confident.

[Weeks 2-4 Post-Surgery]

At my two-week check-up, the stitches were removed, and the wounds were disinfected. Despite hearing that stitch removal could be very painful, the sideburn stitches were not too bad, though I did shed a tear for the inside ones. However, the surgeon's quick hands made it bearable. After stitch removal, the swelling decreased significantly, and I was excited about the continued improvement.

I could eat more types of food, including spicy dishes and cakes. The foreign feeling of the stitches in my mouth was gone, and I happily left behind the liquid diet, enjoying regular meals.

[One Month Post-Surgery]

By now, my face looked noticeably smaller, and I often received compliments about my face. People even asked if I had my eyes or nose done, as my smaller face made my features look more pronounced. Though there was still some swelling, I wore a mask when going out, receiving numerous compliments about how much better I looked. I felt truly happy and confident about my appearance.

[Three Months Post-Surgery]

It's hard to believe it's already been three months! Today, I flew for the first time since the surgery and only felt slightly more pressure in my ears than usual.

I’m continually amazed at how different my face looks compared to two months ago. My face looks natural, and no one can tell I had surgery unless I mention it.

Last summer, I wore a mask diligently, but now I proudly show my face. People around me comment on how small my face has become, and I enjoy wearing sunglasses and hats that I previously avoided. At my regular check-up, the doctor said my bones were healing well and advised me to relax my facial muscles. Although I was nervous about removing the screws in my mouth, the procedure was quick and painless thanks to my skilled surgeon.

Now that my lower face is more defined, I receive many compliments about how cute I look. Surprisingly, I enjoy being seen as cute. I can eat cookies, snacks, and meat without needing to cut them into small pieces. I can even enjoy alcohol now, and recently, a cold beer almost brought tears to my eyes.

I’m incredibly grateful to my surgeon for giving me a happier life.

I’ll continue to take good care of myself and look forward to sharing my improved look in the future!
