제목 One Year After Double Jaw Surgery for Prognathism! Why Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Hello!

It’s already been one year since I had double jaw surgery.

The surgery turned out to be much bigger than I expected, but now I truly feel it was the right choice.

<Before Surgery>

Before the operation, my underbite was so severe that even when I closed my mouth, there was still a gap between my teeth. On top of that, I hated the way my lower facial line looked whenever I smiled, which caused me a lot of stress.

After researching many clinics, I decided to undergo double jaw surgery along with two-point contouring (square jaw and chin) at WHY Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

It has now been a year since surgery, and I feel like I’ve changed so much that I’ve completely forgotten all the discomfort and long recovery process.

The biggest improvement is that the lower facial line I was most insecure about looks natural and pretty when I smile. These days, I can smile brightly and confidently in photos, which is the most meaningful change for me.

All the swelling has now gone down, and people around me can’t even tell I had surgery—my face looks completely natural!

Up until about six months, I still had a little swelling, but as time went by my facial contour gradually settled. Now, at the one-year mark, it truly feels like my own face. I especially love how my side profile has changed—it still makes me happy whenever I take a selfie.

Eating is no problem at all now. Even tough foods are fine, and I can take a big bite of a hamburger without any issue, which makes me so satisfied.

By the three-month mark, the minor discomforts I had were completely gone.

Since the recovery period was quite long, I had to make the decision very carefully. But now, being able to smile with confidence and enjoy a normal life makes me truly happy.

If anyone is struggling with the same concerns I had, I highly recommend this surgery!

<My Recovery Journey – After 3 Months>

<Before Surgery>

<1 Month Post-Op>

Weeks 1–2:

The stitches were removed, my mouth opened well, and I was almost back to my daily routine. Honestly, once you get through the first week, things really do get much easier!

I could breathe normally again, and the runny nose and phlegm were gone. My face was still very swollen, so I felt shy going outside, but the swelling went down noticeably day by day.

I was able to eat soft foods like porridge and bread.

The hospital staff took great care of me until the stitches were removed, and the coordinator was so kind, answering all my worries and sharing in my concerns. I was really grateful for that support.

🫢 One-Month Thoughts

Having had an underbite, I completely understand the frustration and stress—it affected my confidence for years, and I always felt small whenever someone mentioned my jaw.

That said, I think double jaw surgery is something you must consider very carefully.

I’m writing this review because I’m satisfied with my results, but honestly, I was lucky—my hospital, orthodontist, and my health condition all lined up without issues. If even one thing had gone wrong, the surgery could have been delayed 3–6 months, and the costs would have skyrocketed.

So if you’re planning this surgery, I strongly suggest double-checking your hospital and discussing thoroughly with the surgeon.

In my personal opinion, definitely choose an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic, not a plastic surgery clinic. Oral surgeons consider both functional and aesthetic aspects, so it’s much safer that way.

<3 Months Post-Op>

Up until one month, I used to say, “If I could go back, I’d never do this again.” But as the swelling went down and my facial line became defined, honestly the before-and-after difference was so dramatic that now I’d definitely do it again.

Most importantly, the lower facial line I hated when I smiled has improved so much that I can now laugh confidently and take photos without worry—I’m really satisfied.

I still had some swelling left in my cheeks, chin, and philtrum area, but about 80% was gone. I didn’t even do any special anti-swelling treatments—it just went away naturally over time.

I could eat meat, though tough foods like ribs still made my teeth ache a little. I guess that was still too much at the time. Aside from that, eating was no problem.

At that point, because of the swelling, it was still a bit hard to take a big bite of a hamburger, and it felt like there wasn’t enough space inside my mouth. But my mouth opening exercises were minimal, and I could already open wide enough for three fingers, so I was happy with the progress.

My bite fit together perfectly, and my orthodontist was so pleased that they even suggested removing my braces at just three months. I think the surgery went really well!
